YML Cup: Sharlston Rovers v New Earswick All Blacks: Saturday 30th April -
Brett Delaney’s men had a break from the YML Premier division this week, with a YML Challenge Cup game against Division 1 leaders Sharlston Rovers.
Sharlston put out a big physical squad, on a small sized pitch but it was the away team who started the better, using their pace and ball handling ability to go over first after an accurately placed kick into the dead ball area by Liam Gargan was pounced on unchallenged by second row Joe Stearman. Stearman turning back the clock with another fantastic performance.
After more strong defensive work by New Earswick, and more slick handling, Gargan sent in pacey centre and man of the match Will Holmes with a brilliant looping pass out wide, Holmes defensive display was also outstanding.
Sharlston started to play some more controlled rugby but fumbled the ball out wide, allowing winger Dean Smith to pick up the loose ball and race 70m to score in the corner.
Sharlston continued to pile pressure on the All Black’s with their physical pack and managed to cross the whitewash before half time. This still left enough time for Holmes to cross for his second, to give the away team a 4-22 lead at the break.
The second half started badly for New Earswick who struggled with their completion rate and their composure, and went away from their game plan and first half intensity.
Rovers siezed the opportunity to hit back and get back into the game with a couple of tries, to set the New Earswick pulses racing.
It took a superb individual effort from Captain Sean Malarkey who dummied and went through the line, raced 40yrds and stepped inside the full back to score, to give the All Black’s some breathing space.
In a tense finish, New Earswick managed to hold out for the win and progress to the next round.
This week, New Earswick welcomed back experienced back rower Jordan Rice, who made a great difference coming off the bench early.
The All Blacks are hoping to build on this and kick on their season and get a win in the league as we host East Hull next weekend at White Rose Ave, 2:30pm.
